Detroit Techno, some say, is the epitomic sound of deserted conveyor belts and the urban decay of 1980’s Motor City – once the symbol of the American Dream. With its throbbing, repetitive sequences and machinist ethos it offers both a post-apocalyptic hymn to the demise of the city’s vast industrial landscape as well as it echoes unmistaken traits of the rich musical heritage associated with Detroit – all with a destined and extremely high tech future in mind. I met Jeff Mills to a talk about Detroit, identity and the future Techno generation.
